I finally received a call on my mobile one workday afternoon. It was the 20th February 2007, and was my orthopaedic surgeon Dr Stuart Hardy. I walked away from my desk, down the hallway to where the reception was good, and rested my elbows on the windowsill as I looked out across the car park to the trees along the river bank. I knew this was the call I had been waiting for.
He quite simply said “I know you will appreciate being told now instead of waiting to come and see me, as is the usual practice. There is no easy way to say this, Barbara, but you have a Chondroblastic Osteosarcoma.”
Osteosarcoma are malignant tumors of bone in both children and adults which invade and destroy the cortex of the bone.
